A New Millennium brings a New Outlook on Baseball
The 2000 Season Preview
By: Cincinnati Red GM
Over the past millennium, the sport of baseball has evolved from it's humble AL - NL roots to become a booming industry, with many faces, new and old, looking to take there shots at the records of the past. Here are some of the more prominent ones:
Hitters:
Mark McGwire 1B STL:
The 36 years young 1B continues his assault on the record books, hitting a combined 135 homers in the past two seasons and drove in 147 runs 2 years in a row. Likely the most feared hitter in this league, McGwire will attempt to strive off time as the 2000 season comes upon us.
Barry Bonds LF SFG:
Barry seems to doing his father good, as he carries the Bonds family further into the baseball record books. The 35 year old is coming off an injury filled season were he missed 60 games, but still seems to have more then enough left in his tank. Barry is an experienced batter who promises a return to glory. Don't be the one to count him out this year.
Larry Walker RF COL:
The 1999 Bating champion continues to reek havoc upon hitters, even in his 30's. But, the 33 year old Walker's amazing season can be attributed more to his own skills then to the friendly confines of Coors Field. Walker is a team player who you could easily build a team around, no matter his age.
Alex Rodriguez SS SEA:
Easily this leagues most complete young player, Rodriguez brings great defense along with his bat. At the tender age of 24, Rodriguez is already showing a HOF type of ability comparable to some of the best to ever play SS. You can't go wrong with A-Rod
Pitchers:
Pedro Martinez SP BOS:
At the age of 28, Pedro has officially taken the crown of best pitcher in this league and held it without a doubt. He produced a magnificent campaign in 1999, winning 23 games while losing only 4. This outstanding win total was supported by a 2.07 ERA and an unreal 313-37 K to BB ratio. How can Boston not be a AL East power with this guy fronting there staff?
Mariano Rivera RP NYY:
Yes, arguably the best pitcher on the WS Champions is the only closer who deserves top pitcher consideration among the best in this league. The 30 year old Rivera saved 51 games in 1999, holding opponents to a microscopic 1.83 ERA and a 52-18 K to BB ratio. Rivera's outstanding numbers, all we can ask ourselves is, What will Mariano do next?
Greg Maddux SP ATL:
"The Mad Dog" continues to hold his spot among the leagues best pitchers, as he continues producing with his pinpoint control and movement. Maddux won 19 games in 1999, in opposed to losing 9. Opponents were held to a 3.57 ERA, and though his 136-37 K to BB rate is not amazing, it still produces the results. Maddux's style of pitching will allow him to pitch for many more years.
Randy Johnson SP ARI:
With the arrival of Johnson to Arizona, a shift in power is possible in the NL West. Thats how good Johnson is. One of baseball's greatest Lefties produced a 17 win, 9 loss year last year, while finishing second to Pedro Martinez in ERA with one of 2.48. Johnson, however, made many a reader crap there pants in shock, as they read he managed to K 364! batters last season, while walking only 70. Johnson is looking to build off of last seasons success this year, as he heads the Arizona staff.
Now, there are many other players, hitters and pitcher alike, who deserve honorable mention for there skills and abilities. I would also like to make a shout out to them! The new year brings a new host of talent, and the baseball gods have blessed us, as the sport is in good hands. Play ball guys!
(This is my first Story for the League, and I hoped you guys liked it ^^. I will try to get better with each one)
