Type A Free Agent -any player rated 90 or better -worth a first round pick(top 15 protected)
Type B Free Agent -any player rated 85-89 -worth second round pick(top 15 protected)
If your new to the game let me try to explain it for you. FA compensation is a way for small market teams to get something back for players they can not afford to resign. So if you lose a player rated 90 or better then you will receive either a late first round pick or an early second rounder from the team who signed your guy. Same goes with 85-89 players except you then get late 2nd-early third round pick. Top 15 protected means if the team with picks 1-15 sign him, then you will get a pick one round later.
What happens if nobody signs them? If nobody makes an offer for a Type A or B free agent by the start of spring training, his previous team will be allowed to bring him back on a one year deal at his last season's salary. If not they can let him go but will not be eligible to receive compensation.
Teams are only allowed to sign one Type A and one Type B, but if the player loses compensation status then he is fair game.
