Type A Free Agent -any player rated 90 or better -worth a first round pick(top 15 protected)
Type B Free Agent -any player rated 85-89 -worth second round pick(top 15 protected)
If your new to the game let me try to explain it for you. FA compensation is a way for small market teams to get something back for players they can not afford to resign. So if you lose a player rated 90 or better then you will receive either a late first round pick or an early second rounder from the team who signed your guy. Same goes with 85-89 players except you then get late 2nd-early third round pick. Top 15 protected means if the team with picks 1-15 sign him, then you will get a pick one round later.
What happens if nobody signs them? If nobody makes an offer for a Type A or B free agent at the end of the first round of free agency then a decision has to be made by the players old team. They can either negotiate and resign the player, bring the player back on a one year contract at the desired rate of the player(non negotiable), or they can still let the player be a free agent but lose any rights to compensation.
Teams are only allowed to sign one Type A and one Type B, but if the player loses compensation status then he is fair game.
